The Wiener Dog Capital of Texas
The Buda Wiener Dog Festival is an annual country fair held every spring. The event kicks off with a Pet Parade, followed by the Wiener Dog Races. This event is in its 18th year. Buda Wiener Dog Festival also known as “The Wiener Dog Capital of Texas”, and is sponsored by the Buda Lions club.
Every year more than 1500 people from all over the United States come to participate in the event or just to bring their Dachshund for a family fun filled day. The Buda Wiener Dog Races attract over 400 race participants, there are arts and crafts vendors, pet health booths, local veterinarians, food and live entertainment.
My family and I take a trip to Buda every year, to participate in all the fun filled activities the festival has to offer. We love to see all the beautiful Dachshunds that proudly walk beside their owners. Dachshunds of every size, color, and shape are sure to be at the festival, from the traditional brown, red, and black, to include the Brindle's and Dapple's. If you love Wiener dogs this is the place to be.
The Wiener Dog Races began 20 years ago and in their first year there were only 30 Wiener dogs scheduled to race behind the Buda public library. Since then the Wiener dog race and festival have evolved into an event that attracts over 1500 visitors per year. The Buda Lions club sponsors this festival, and proceeds help children with vision impairments, provides cornea transplants from the Lions Eye Bank, provides guide dogs furnished by the Lions Leader Dogs for the Blind, and offers scholarships to high school seniors. By participating in this event you are helping the Buda Lions do great things for our community.

Tips for beating the heat at the Buda Wiener Dog Festival
If this is your first time at the Annual Wiener Dog Festival, here are a few tips.
Take the shuttle bus to the park, as parking downtown Buda will be a little crowded. For your convenience, shuttle buses run from the Cabela’s parking lot to the park.
If you plan on making this a weekend trip there are several hotels nearby, or bring your RV and camp at the local RV Park.
Remember take water for yourself and your pets. If want to watch the dog races, you can view them from the bleachers or picnic on a grassy hill. If choosing the grassy hill - bring a blanket or something soft to sit on.
If you would like to enter the dog races go to the Lions Club link below this article for more information.
Dachshund facts: Dachshunds were first bred in Germany in the 1600’s, and were bred to hunt badgers. There are three coat varieties, smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired. Standards weigh from 16-32 pounds and miniatures weigh 11 pounds or less.
Dachshunds are ideal family pets, and are great playful companions for adults and children.
