Crime Prevention and Security in your Automobile

Parents please share these few safety tips with your children. Driver’s Education rarely talks about personal safety.

So many people are assaulted near their automobiles; please keep these few safety tips in mind.

Keep your car in good running condition; check your tires and oil pressure regularly. Never drive your car with less than a quarter of a tank of fuel. Carry a jack, tool kit, flares, matches, a flashlight, and service your spare tire.

Should you have car trouble pull over to the right, open the trunk, turn on your emergency flashers and call roadside assistance. Stay in your vehicle and lock your doors. If someone offers assistance, crack your window and let them know help is on the way, or if you are traveling without a cell phone ask them to make the call for you. Do not leave your vehicle unless you are within a safe walking distance of assistance. If you feel that you cannot stay with your vehicle and must walk to get to safety, it is recommended that you walk facing traffic. This will help stop anyone from trying to offer you a ride, due to the fact they would have passed you and will unlikely turn around.

Do not pick up hitch hikers, do not stop to help another motorist on the road, drive on and call the local police to them know that someone may be in need of assistance.

When parking your vehicle, park in a well lighted area and as close to the public as possible.

Before entering your car, be sure to have your key out and ready and check the back seat. Look around be aware of your surroundings. Most robberies occur while the victim is fumbling around for keys.

Should someone indicate that something is wrong with your vehicle while driving and urges you to pull over, do not comply. Let the other driver know that you are aware and pull over to the nearest service station.

If you feel that someone is following you, do not try to out run them. Calmly call 911, describe the situation and give details of your location and the describe the vehicle in question.

There are no absolute guaranties that following a few basic rules you will never become a victim, however you can reduce your risk if you are aware of your surroundings.

Crime reports indicate that crime is down due to the availability of cell phones; you can call for assistance, search for directions, and most have GPS available. Good Samaritans are also using the photo capabilities of their phones, as well as reporting suspicious activity. We all can do our part in the fight against crime by watching out for one another. Help reduce crime by reporting suspicious activity to your local authorities.

Great hub! I can still remember my 6th grade P.E. teacher telling all of us girls to always leave with our keys in hand, holding a key out. That way, if anyone assaults us, we have a key in our hands to scratch, gouge, or punch with. Another tip was to do anything I had to to not get into the car with anyone I don't know, the chances of survival go way down by getting into the car with an assailant, throw your purse, throw your keys, let them go after the property so you can get away.

Thank you for your comments. My father used to tell me the same thing. Keep your Key between your fingers and you can use ti to jab at the throat or face.
